Steps to your license
... Teens in California who are at least 15 1/2 and want to obtain their driver's license before age 18 must complete the following steps:

  • 25 hours of Driver Education -
    not including breaks or meal times.
  • 6 hours of Behind-the-Wheel Driver Training -
    completed with an accredited/licensed driving school.
  • Possess a permit for a minimum of 6 months.
  • 50 hours, total, of behind-the-wheel practice
    completed with your parents, guardians, or an instructor.
